Job Description
The FOI Coordinator – Information Access Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring transparency and compliance with information access legislation. This position is responsible for managing requests under the Freedom of Information Act and related privacy legislation, providing expert advice, and maintaining accurate records. You will work within a dynamic team to facilitate timely and accurate responses to requests, ensuring the ATO’s adherence to statutory obligations. This role requires a strong understanding of legislative frameworks, excellent communication skills, and meticulous attention to detail.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and coordinate Freedom of Information (FOI) requests in accordance with the FOI Act 1982 (Cth).
- Provide expert advice to internal stakeholders on information access and privacy legislation.
- Liaise with applicants, internal business areas, and external government bodies.
- Draft and review decisions, correspondence, and other documents related to FOI matters.
- Maintain accurate records and case management systems for all FOI requests.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of information access processes and policies.
- Conduct research and analysis on complex FOI and privacy issues.
- Assist in training and developing internal staff on FOI and information access best practices.
Required Skills
- Proven understanding of the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (Cth) and Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to draft clear and concise reports and correspondence.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks, set priorities, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- High level of attention to detail and accuracy.
- Proficiency in using case management systems and standard office software.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Tertiary qualification in Law, Public Policy, Information Management, or a related discipline.
- Previous experience in a government environment, particularly with FOI or information access roles.
- Experience with administrative law decision-making processes.
- Ability to obtain and maintain an an Australian Government security clearance.
