Job Description
As a Bridge Painting Sandblaster (Mate) at Kiewit Corporation, you will play a crucial role in preparing steel surfaces for painting on various bridge and infrastructure projects. Working under the guidance of experienced sandblasters, you will assist in setting up equipment, operating sandblasting machinery to remove old paint, rust, and contaminants, and ensuring surfaces meet strict specifications for new coatings. This physically demanding role requires a strong commitment to safety, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in outdoor and sometimes challenging environments. You will be an integral part of a team dedicated to maintaining and extending the lifespan of vital infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist lead sandblasters in setting up and dismantling sandblasting equipment, including compressors, hoses, and nozzles.
- Operate various types of abrasive blasting equipment to clean and profile steel surfaces according to project specifications.
- Ensure proper containment and cleanup of abrasive materials, adhering to environmental regulations.
- Perform routine maintenance and inspection of equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Monitor surface profiles and cleanliness, ensuring readiness for subsequent painting applications.
- Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, procedures, and relevant OSHA regulations.
- Handle and store hazardous materials in a safe and compliant manner.
- Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors regarding project progress and any issues.
- Work in a variety of outdoor weather conditions and at elevated heights.
Required Skills
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy equipment, standing for long periods, and working in confined spaces or at heights.
- Strong commitment to safety and adherence to all safety protocols.
- Basic understanding of construction site safety and practices.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately.
- Team-oriented mindset with good communication skills.
- Reliable transportation to various job sites within the region.
Preferred Qualifications
- 1+ years of experience in construction, industrial cleaning, or a similar physically demanding role.
- Experience operating power tools or heavy equipment.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
- Knowledge of different abrasive blasting media and techniques.
