Job Description

Chesterfield County Government is seeking enthusiastic individuals for a Trainee Environmental Health Officer position. This is an exceptional entry-level opportunity for those with little to no prior experience, as comprehensive training and development will be provided. You will learn the essential skills and knowledge required to become a competent Environmental Health Officer, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations across various settings.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in a structured training program covering environmental health principles, regulations, and investigative techniques.
- Shadow experienced Environmental Health Officers during inspections of food establishments, public pools, schools, and other regulated facilities.
- Assist in conducting routine site visits and investigations under direct supervision.
- Learn to interpret and apply local, state, and federal environmental health laws and codes.
- Develop skills in data collection, record-keeping, and report writing related to environmental health matters.
- Engage with community members and businesses, providing guidance on environmental health best practices.
- Participate in emergency response drills and public health initiatives as required.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Strong interest in public health, environmental science, or related fields.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to learn and apply complex regulatory information.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Valid Virginia driver's license upon hire.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in environmental health, public health, biology, chemistry, or a related scientific discipline (or currently pursuing).
- Previous volunteer experience in community service or public sector settings.
- Basic understanding of public health principles or environmental regulations.
