Job Description
Join our dedicated team as a Refugee Support Worker and play a vital role in assisting newly arrived refugees and asylum seekers integrate into the Western Australian community. This rewarding position involves providing practical support, guidance, and advocacy to individuals and families, helping them navigate new systems, access essential services, and build a new life with dignity and independence. You will be a first point of contact, offering cultural orientation, emotional support, and connecting clients with necessary resources such as housing, healthcare, education, and employment opportunities. Your work will directly contribute to fostering a welcoming and supportive environment for those who have experienced significant challenges.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide initial needs assessments for newly arrived refugees and asylum seekers.
- Offer culturally sensitive support and orientation to Australian society, services, and local community resources.
- Assist clients with accessing essential services including housing, healthcare, education, welfare, and legal aid.
- Provide advocacy on behalf of clients to ensure their rights and needs are met.
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with community organizations, government agencies, and other service providers.
- Maintain accurate and confidential client records and prepare reports as required.
- Facilitate workshops and group sessions on topics relevant to refugee settlement.
- Respond to crisis situations with sensitivity and appropriate referrals.
- Contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of support programs.
Required Skills
- Minimum 1 year of experience in social work, community development, refugee support, or a related field.
- Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills.
- Strong empathy, patience, and resilience.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Proven organizational and time management skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Current Western Australian Driver's License and access to a reliable vehicle.
- Ability to obtain a satisfactory National Police Clearance and Working with Children Check.
Preferred Qualifications
- Tertiary qualification in Social Work, Community Services, Psychology, International Development, or a related discipline.
- Fluency in a language commonly spoken by refugee communities (e.g., Arabic, Dari, Pashto, Farsi, Ukrainian).
- Knowledge of the Australian immigration and refugee settlement system.
- Experience in trauma-informed care principles.
