Job Description

Join the ACT Parks and Conservation Service as a Wildlife Management Assistant. In this vital role, you will support our efforts to monitor, protect, and manage the diverse wildlife populations across the Tuggeranong district and broader ACT. You will assist with fieldwork, data collection, habitat restoration, and community engagement initiatives, contributing directly to the conservation of native species and their environments. This position offers a unique opportunity to work outdoors, learn practical conservation skills, and make a tangible difference in environmental protection.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct wildlife surveys and monitoring activities, including animal trapping, tagging, and observation.
  • Assist with habitat restoration projects, such as planting native vegetation, weed removal, and erosion control.
  • Collect and manage data related to wildlife populations, habitat conditions, and environmental factors.
  • Operate and maintain field equipment and vehicles safely and efficiently.
  • Participate in community education and engagement programs to promote wildlife conservation.
  • Report on wildlife sightings, incidents, and environmental concerns.
  • Follow established protocols and safety procedures for all fieldwork.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated interest in wildlife conservation and environmental management.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Good physical fitness and ability to perform fieldwork in varied terrain and weather conditions.
  • Basic computer proficiency for data entry and report writing.
  • Valid Australian Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certificate or Diploma in Conservation and Land Management, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Previous experience in fieldwork, wildlife monitoring, or habitat restoration.
  • First Aid Certificate.
  • Knowledge of local ACT flora and fauna.
