Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Packaging Engineer to join our innovative team in Winston-Salem, NC. This role is crucial for the design, development, and implementation of packaging solutions across our diverse product portfolio. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring product integrity, optimizing costs, enhancing sustainability, and improving overall packaging efficiency from concept to launch. This is an on-site position, and relocation assistance will be provided for qualified candidates.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and test new packaging structures and materials for various consumer products.
- Collaborate with R&D, Marketing, Supply Chain, and Manufacturing teams to integrate packaging requirements into product development cycles.
- Evaluate and select appropriate packaging materials based on product protection, cost, sustainability, and aesthetic requirements.
- Conduct package performance testing (e.g., drop, vibration, compression) to ensure product safety and integrity during transit and storage.
- Identify and implement cost-saving opportunities through packaging optimization, material reduction, and process improvements.
- Manage packaging projects from conception through commercialization, ensuring timelines and budgets are met.
- Stay current with packaging trends, technologies, and regulations to ensure compliance and drive innovation.
- Develop and maintain detailed packaging specifications, documentation, and quality control standards.
- Work with external vendors and suppliers to source packaging materials and evaluate their capabilities.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in packaging development within the consumer goods, pharmaceutical, or food industry.
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) for packaging design.
- Strong understanding of various packaging materials (e.g., plastics, paperboard, flexible films) and their properties.
- Demonstrated project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
- Familiarity with packaging machinery and manufacturing processes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Packaging Engineering or a related discipline.
- Experience with sustainability initiatives in packaging design (e.g., recycled content, recyclability, compostability).
- Knowledge of ISTA testing protocols and ASTM standards.
- Experience with packaging automation and serialization.
- Familiarity with SAP or other ERP systems.
