Job Description
Are you looking to kickstart a rewarding career in civil infrastructure? WSDOT is seeking enthusiastic and dedicated individuals to join our team as Trainee Highway Inspectors. This entry-level position requires no prior experience, as we provide comprehensive, hands-on training to equip you with all the necessary skills and knowledge. You will work alongside experienced professionals, learning to perform essential inspections that ensure the safety and longevity of our state’s highways and related infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in extensive on-the-job training programs covering highway inspection techniques, safety protocols, and quality standards.
- Assist senior inspectors in conducting routine visual inspections of roadways, bridges, culverts, and other highway assets.
- Learn to identify and document defects, damage, and maintenance needs using specified tools and reporting procedures.
- Support the collection of data and samples for quality assurance testing.
- Adhere to all safety regulations and guidelines while working in various outdoor and roadside environments.
- Operate and maintain basic inspection equipment and tools under supervision.
- Complete all assigned training modules and certifications in a timely manner.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections and observations.
- Collaborate effectively with team members and other WSDOT personnel.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid Washington State driver's license or ability to obtain one within a specified timeframe.
- Ability to learn quickly and adapt to new procedures and technologies.
- Strong attention to detail and observational skills.
- Basic computer literacy for data entry and report generation.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Commitment to safety and adherence to all workplace policies.
- Physical ability to perform duties in various weather conditions and terrains, which may include walking, standing, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications
- Some experience in outdoor work or manual labor.
- Basic knowledge of construction materials or processes.
- Enrollment in or completion of a trade school program related to construction, engineering, or a related field.
