Job Description
The City of Bowie Government is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Trainee Environmental Health Officer to join our dedicated Public Sector team. This is an exceptional entry-level opportunity for individuals passionate about environmental health and public service, offering comprehensive training and mentorship. You will embark on a structured program designed to equip you with the knowledge and practical skills required to excel in environmental health inspections, investigations, and community outreach. No prior experience in environmental health is required; we are looking for individuals eager to learn and make a tangible difference in our community’s well-being.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in a comprehensive training program covering local, state, and federal environmental health regulations.
- Shadow experienced Environmental Health Officers during routine inspections of food establishments, public pools, and other facilities.
- Assist in conducting investigations of environmental health complaints, under supervision.
- Learn to interpret and apply environmental health codes and standards.
- Support public education initiatives on topics such as food safety, waste management, and vector control.
- Maintain accurate records and prepare reports related to inspection activities and investigations.
- Develop skills in effective communication with business owners, residents, and other stakeholders.
Required Skills
- Strong commitment to public service and environmental protection.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to learn and interpret complex regulations and policies.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- A valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation for fieldwork.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Eagerness to learn and develop new skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field.
- Prior customer service experience or experience working with the public.
- Demonstrated interest in environmental issues or public health.
