Job Description
Northern Gateway Public Schools is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Music Director / Band Teacher to join our team in Whitecourt, Alberta. This is a unique opportunity for an individual passionate about music education to inspire students from elementary through high school levels. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and developing comprehensive music programs, including band, choir, and general music instruction. We are looking for a creative educator who can foster a love for music, build strong performance ensembles, and contribute positively to our school community. Experience with diverse learning styles and a commitment to student success are paramount. CoS (Certificate of Sponsorship) is available for eligible international candidates.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement engaging music curriculum for various grade levels (e.g., K-12, specific to school needs).
- Direct and rehearse school bands, choirs, and other musical ensembles for performances.
- Teach instrumental music, general music theory, and vocal techniques.
- Organize and oversee school concerts, recitals, and other musical events.
- Collaborate with other teachers and staff to integrate music into broader school activities.
- Assess student progress and provide constructive feedback.
- Manage and maintain musical instruments, equipment, and music library resources.
- Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment where all students feel encouraged to participate.
- Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and program activities.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with music education trends.
Required Skills
- Bachelor of Education degree with a specialization in Music or a related field.
- Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate (or eligibility for one).
- Proven experience directing school bands and/or choirs.
- Proficiency in playing multiple musical instruments, particularly wind and percussion instruments.
- Strong pedagogical skills and classroom management abilities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to inspire and motivate students of all ages and skill levels.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Music Education or a related discipline.
- Experience with music technology and digital music production.
- Previous experience teaching in a Canadian school environment.
- Familiarity with the Alberta curriculum for music education.
- Ability to teach additional fine arts subjects (e.g., drama, visual arts).
