Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Zookeeper / Exotic Animal Specialist to join our animal care team. This critical role involves the daily care and welfare of a diverse collection of exotic animals, ensuring their habitats are clean, safe, and enriching. You will be instrumental in implementing our animal management protocols, contributing to educational initiatives, and playing a vital part in our conservation efforts. Key Responsibilities
- Perform daily feeding, watering, and cleaning of animal enclosures and habitats according to established protocols.
- Monitor animal health and behavior closely, accurately documenting observations and reporting any concerns to veterinary staff.
- Develop and implement animal enrichment programs to promote natural behaviors and physical activity.
- Assist with medical procedures, animal training, and restraint as needed.
- Maintain accurate daily records of animal care, feeding, health, and enrichment activities.
- Engage with sanctuary visitors, providing educational information about the animals, their habitats, and conservation efforts.
- Participate in the upkeep and maintenance of exhibits, ensuring a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment for both animals and guests.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and sanctuary policies, especially regarding animal handling and public interaction.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 12 months of direct animal care experience in a zoo, sanctuary, or similar professional setting.
- Demonstrated knowledge of animal husbandry, nutrition, and behavior.
- Ability to observe animals closely for signs of illness or distress.
- Strong physical stamina and ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, lift up to 50 lbs, and perform strenuous tasks.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Commitment to animal welfare and safety.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Zoology, Biology, Animal Science, Wildlife Management, or a related field.
- Experience with operant conditioning and positive reinforcement training techniques.
- Proficiency in maintaining detailed animal records using specialized software.
- Valid Florida driver's license or equivalent international license.
