Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Thoroughbred Trainer / Manager to oversee a premier racing and breeding operation for one of our distinguished clients. This pivotal role requires a deep understanding of equine physiology, training methodologies, and operational management within the thoroughbred industry. The successful candidate will be responsible for the welfare, training, and performance of a string of racehorses, as well as the day-to-day management of the associated facilities and team. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement bespoke training programs for thoroughbred racehorses, ensuring peak performance and optimal welfare.
  • Oversee the daily care, feeding, and exercise regimes of all horses, maintaining meticulous health and fitness records.
  • Manage a team of stable staff, including hiring, training, scheduling, and performance management.
  • Liaise with veterinarians, farriers, and other equine specialists to ensure the highest standards of animal health and care.
  • Plan and execute race day strategies, including entries, declarations, and jockey engagements.
  • Manage the operational budget for the stable, ensuring cost-effectiveness and resource optimization.
  • Provide regular reports and updates to the client regarding horse performance, stable operations, and financial matters.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant racing regulations and welfare standards.
  • Maintain the highest standards of stable presentation and equipment maintenance.
  • Identify and nurture young stock, overseeing their breaking and pre-training development.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 5 years of proven experience in thoroughbred training and stable management.
  • Exceptional understanding of equine health, nutrition, and welfare practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute effective training programs for racehorses.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Proficiency in stable administration, record-keeping, and budgeting.
  • Valid UK driving licence and ability to drive horse transporters.
  • Deep knowledge of British racing rules and regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced qualifications in Equine Science, Business Management, or a related field.
  • Experience managing a large string of racehorses for a high-profile owner.
  • Established network within the thoroughbred racing industry.
  • Proven track record of successful race outcomes and horse development.
  • First Aid certification (equine or human).
