Job Description
IFF is seeking a highly motivated and curious Flavor Science Intern to join our dynamic Research & Development team in Portland, Oregon. This internship offers a unique opportunity for aspiring scientists to gain hands-on experience in the exciting world of flavor creation and application within the food and beverage industry. You will work alongside experienced flavorists and scientists, contributing to real-world projects and learning fundamental principles of flavor chemistry, sensory evaluation, and product development. This is an entry-level position designed for students eager to kickstart their career in flavor science, with comprehensive training provided.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior flavorists and scientists with flavor development projects, including sample preparation and analysis.
- Conduct basic laboratory procedures, such as weighing, mixing, and preparing prototypes for evaluation.
- Participate in sensory evaluation sessions, providing objective observations and data collection.
- Support the R&D team in maintaining laboratory equipment and inventory.
- Document experimental procedures, results, and observations accurately and systematically.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand project requirements and contribute to solutions.
- Research and analyze scientific literature related to flavor chemistry and food science trends.
Required Skills
- Strong interest in food science, chemistry, biology, or related scientific fields.
- Basic understanding of laboratory safety and procedures.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Food Science, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Previous experience in a laboratory setting (academic or industrial) is a plus but not required.
- Knowledge of basic statistics or data analysis tools.
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
