Job Description
Are you passionate about working outdoors and contributing to a beautiful environment? North Central College is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Grounds Maintenance Worker / Trainee Gardener to join our Facilities team. This is an entry-level opportunity where no prior professional experience is required – we provide comprehensive training! If you are reliable, enjoy physical work, and are eager to learn the art and science of grounds maintenance and gardening, we encourage you to apply and help us keep our campus pristine.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform general grounds maintenance tasks including mowing, trimming, edging, and weeding.
- Assist with planting, watering, fertilizing, and caring for flowers, shrubs, and trees.
- Operate various hand and power tools safely, such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, and hand shovels.
- Conduct minor repairs and maintenance on irrigation systems, pathways, and outdoor furniture.
- Clear debris, leaves, snow, and ice from pathways, parking lots, and common areas.
- Assist with seasonal landscaping projects, including preparing garden beds, mulching, and planting annuals.
- Adhere to all safety guidelines and procedures while performing duties.
- Report any equipment malfunctions or safety hazards to supervisors.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment, including storage areas and vehicles.
- Support other Facilities Management tasks as directed.
Required Skills
- Willingness to learn and take direction.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Reliability and a strong work ethic.
- Valid Illinois Driver's License or ability to obtain one within a specified timeframe.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
- Basic understanding of workplace safety principles.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Previous experience in outdoor work or a personal interest in gardening/landscaping.
- Familiarity with basic hand tools and gardening equipment.
