Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Backstage Manager to join the production team at the Cork Opera House. The Backstage Manager will be responsible for the smooth and safe operation of all backstage activities for a variety of productions, ensuring the highest standards of technical execution and operational efficiency. This role requires strong leadership, excellent problem-solving skills, and a deep understanding of live performance production.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all backstage operations, including stage management, crew scheduling, and equipment management for various productions.
- Manage and supervise backstage staff, including stage technicians, carpenters, electricians, and props personnel, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.
- Liaise effectively with directors, designers, touring companies, and other departments to ensure seamless technical delivery of productions.
- Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations, conducting regular risk assessments and implementing safe working practices.
- Manage the maintenance and inventory of backstage equipment, tools, and materials.
- Oversee the load-in, setup, operation, and strike of sets, lighting, sound, and other production elements.
- Develop and manage budgets for backstage operations and specific production needs.
- Provide technical support and solutions during rehearsals and performances.
Required Skills
- Minimum 3 years of experience in backstage management or a senior technical role within a professional theatre or performing arts venue.
- Demonstrable knowledge of stagecraft, lighting, sound, rigging, and other technical theatre disciplines.
- Strong leadership and team management abilities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proven ability to work under pressure and solve problems effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Understanding of health and safety regulations pertinent to live theatre.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings and stage plans.
Preferred Qualifications
- A degree or diploma in Technical Theatre, Stage Management, or a related field.
- Experience with a variety of performing arts genres, including opera, musical theatre, and dance.
- First Aid certification.
- Experience with CAD software and production management tools.
