Job Description

We are seeking highly motivated and experienced Registered Nurses to join our dynamic team as a Charge Nurse / Ward Sister within Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of nursing staff, ensuring efficient and effective ward operation and skill mix.
  • Provide high-quality, evidence-based nursing care to all patients, acting as a role model.
  • Act as a clinical expert and resource for junior staff, offering guidance, supervision, and mentorship.
  • Oversee patient admissions, discharges, and complex care planning processes, ensuring seamless transitions.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all Trust policies, clinical guidelines, and regulatory requirements, including CQC standards.
  • Participate in staff development, including conducting performance reviews, appraisals, and identifying training needs.
  • Manage ward resources effectively, including staffing levels, equipment, and supplies, to optimise patient safety and care.
  • Communicate effectively and compassionately with patients, their families, and multidisciplinary team members, facilitating collaborative care.
  • Actively contribute to clinical governance, risk management, and quality improvement initiatives within the ward and Trust.
  • Professionally handle patient and relative complaints and incidents, escalating concerns appropriately and participating in investigations.
  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation of patient care and ward activities.

Required Skills

  • Valid NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) registration as a Registered Nurse.
  • Minimum of 3 years post-registration nursing experience in an acute hospital care setting.
  • Demonstrable leadership and management experience, including supervising and coordinating staff.
  • Excellent clinical assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation skills.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organisational abilities.
  • Proven ability to work effectively under pressure, prioritise tasks, and manage complex clinical situations.
  • Proficiency in English, meeting all NMC language requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-registration qualification in a relevant nursing specialty (e.g., mentorship, advanced clinical practice, specific ward specialism).
  • Experience with electronic patient record systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner).
  • Previous experience in a Ward Sister, Charge Nurse, or equivalent Senior Staff Nurse role.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development and commitment to lifelong learning.
