Job Description

Goulburn Base Hospital is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) Counselor to join our community health team. In this pivotal role, you will provide essential counseling, support, and intervention services to individuals and families impacted by substance use disorders. You will be responsible for conducting comprehensive assessments, developing individualized treatment plans, facilitating group sessions, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to ensure holistic client care. This position requires a deep understanding of AOD issues, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to evidence-based practices. You will play a crucial role in empowering clients towards recovery and improving their overall quality of life.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough biopsychosocial assessments to determine client needs and treatment suitability.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor individualized treatment plans in collaboration with clients.
  • Provide one-on-one counseling and facilitate group therapy sessions for individuals seeking recovery from AOD dependence.
  • Offer education and support to clients' families and significant others.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential client records in accordance with professional and organizational standards.
  • Collaborate with internal and external healthcare professionals, social services, and community organizations to ensure comprehensive client care.
  • Advocate for clients and assist them in navigating the healthcare system and accessing community resources.
  • Participate in clinical supervision, team meetings, and ongoing professional development.
  • Contribute to the development and evaluation of AOD programs and services.

Required Skills

  • Relevant Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in AOD counseling or a related mental health field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based AOD treatment modalities and harm reduction principles.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and active listening skills.
  • Ability to conduct comprehensive assessments and develop client-centered treatment plans.
  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate clinical documentation.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and ethical guidelines in counseling.
  • Current Working With Children Check (WWCC) and National Police Check (or ability to obtain).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification in AOD, Mental Health, or a related area.
  • Experience working within a public health or hospital setting.
  • Familiarity with local Goulburn community resources and support networks.
  • Accreditation with a relevant professional body (e.g., PACFA, AASW).
  • Experience in crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques.
