Job Description

Embark on a unique career path as an Antiques Restorer (Trainee) with the National Trust, based in Cheltenham. This entry-level position is designed for individuals passionate about history, craftsmanship, and the preservation of cultural heritage. No prior experience in antique restoration is required as comprehensive training will be provided by our team of expert conservators. You will learn hands-on techniques for the delicate repair and conservation of a wide variety of historic objects, furniture, and decorative arts from our extensive collections. This is an incredible opportunity to develop specialist skills and contribute to the ongoing care of national treasures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior conservators and restorers with various conservation and restoration projects on diverse antique pieces.
  • Learn and meticulously apply traditional and modern restoration techniques under close supervision.
  • Carefully prepare and clean objects for restoration, ensuring accurate documentation and safe handling protocols are followed.
  • Maintain a clean, organised, and safe workshop environment, adhering to all health and safety regulations.
  • Actively participate in all provided training sessions, workshops, and continuous professional development initiatives.
  • Accurately document all restoration processes, including materials used, methodologies, and object condition reports.
  • Adhere strictly to professional conservation ethics and National Trust guidelines.
  • Support the wider conservation team as needed, contributing to the overall preservation efforts.

Required Skills

  • A profound interest in antiques, art history, cultural heritage, or practical conservation.
  • Exceptional manual dexterity and a keen eye for detail, demonstrating patience and precision.
  • A meticulous and methodical approach to intricate tasks.
  • The ability to follow complex instructions accurately and learn new skills quickly.
  • A strong desire to learn and dedicate oneself to developing highly specialised craft skills.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills to interact with team members and document work.
  • Reliability and a strong work ethic.

Preferred Qualifications

  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics.
  • Some demonstrated experience or hobby in practical crafts, fine art, model making, or woodworking.
  • Basic understanding or appreciation of historical periods, material science, or traditional craftsmanship.
  • A portfolio demonstrating artistic or craft skills (optional).
