Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced APS6 Senior Policy Officer to join our Government Strategy team in Wagga Wagga. In this pivotal role, you will contribute to the development and implementation of key government policies and programs designed to enhance social outcomes. You will conduct comprehensive research, analyse complex information, and develop robust policy advice for senior stakeholders. This role requires strong analytical capabilities, excellent communication skills, and a proven ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders to achieve strategic objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough research and analysis of complex policy issues and data.
  • Develop and draft high-quality policy papers, briefs, submissions, and recommendations.
  • Engage and consult with internal and external stakeholders, including government agencies, community groups, and peak bodies.
  • Contribute to strategic planning and the development of new government initiatives.
  • Prepare high-quality written materials for a range of audiences, ensuring clarity and accuracy.
  • Provide timely and accurate advice to senior management on policy options and implications.
  • Monitor and evaluate policy effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex ideas clearly.
  • Proven ability to interpret and apply complex legislation, policy frameworks, and government guidelines.
  • Effective stakeholder engagement, negotiation, and relationship management skills.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Sound understanding of Australian government processes and parliamentary procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline such as Public Policy, Social Sciences, Law, Economics, or Political Science.
  • Previous experience working within an Australian government department or agency.
  • A demonstrated understanding of current social policy issues and challenges in Australia.
