Job Description
WSP Canada Inc. is seeking a skilled and dedicated Archaeologist / Heritage Manager to join our growing environmental and heritage team in Sydney, Nova Scotia. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced professional to lead and contribute to significant heritage impact assessments, archaeological field studies, and cultural resource management projects across Nova Scotia and potentially beyond. The successful candidate will play a critical role in ensuring compliance with provincial and federal heritage legislation, managing project teams, and providing expert advice to clients on complex heritage matters. Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage archaeological and heritage impact assessment projects from inception to completion.
- Conduct field reconnaissance, surveys, excavations, and monitoring in accordance with best practices and regulatory requirements.
- Prepare detailed technical reports, heritage permit applications, and management plans.
- Liaise effectively with clients, regulatory agencies, Indigenous communities, and stakeholders.
- Provide expert advice on heritage legislation, policies, and risk mitigation strategies.
- Mentor junior staff and contribute to the professional development of the team.
- Manage project budgets, schedules, and deliverables to ensure successful project outcomes.
- Develop and maintain strong client relationships and identify new business opportunities.
Required Skills
- Master's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, Heritage Management, or a related field.
- Minimum 3 years of professional experience in cultural resource management or archaeology in Canada, preferably Nova Scotia.
- Demonstrated experience leading archaeological field projects (survey, testing, excavation).
- Strong knowledge of federal and provincial heritage legislation, particularly in Atlantic Canada (e.g., Nova Scotia Special Places Protection Act).
- Excellent technical report writing, analytical, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel for fieldwork.
- Proficiency with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS).
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. in a relevant field.
- Experience with Indigenous community engagement and consultation processes.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent experience.
- Experience in a consulting environment.
- Bilingualism (English and French).
