Job Description
Are you passionate about food and eager to learn a unique craft? Sobeys Inc. is looking for an enthusiastic Artisan Cheesemonger Trainee to join our specialty food department in Saint John. This is an incredible entry-level opportunity to delve into the fascinating world of cheese, food affinage, and premium retail sales. No prior experience is required; we provide comprehensive training from the ground up. You’ll learn everything from proper cheese handling and storage to cutting, serving, and educating customers about various artisanal cheeses from around the globe. This role is perfect for someone with a keen interest in culinary arts, a desire to provide excellent customer service, and a willingness to master a skilled trade.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in a comprehensive training program to learn all aspects of cheesemongering and food affinage.
- Learn proper techniques for cutting, wrapping, and displaying a wide variety of artisanal cheeses.
- Assist customers with cheese selections, offer pairing suggestions, and provide detailed product information.
- Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the cheese counter and storage areas, adhering to strict food safety standards.
- Monitor and manage cheese inventory, including rotation and ordering.
- Develop an in-depth knowledge of cheese types, origins, flavor profiles, and proper care.
- Contribute to a positive shopping experience by delivering friendly and knowledgeable service.
- Perform other retail duties as assigned, including operating the cash register and stocking shelves.
Required Skills
- Genuine enthusiasm for food and learning new culinary skills.
- Strong commitment to providing excellent customer service.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented retail environment.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new procedures and product knowledge.

Preferred Qualifications
