Job Description

Laurentian University is seeking a passionate and driven Astro-Botany & Space Agriculture Intern to join our innovative research team. This internship offers a unique opportunity for aspiring scientists and researchers to contribute to cutting-edge projects exploring plant cultivation in extraterrestrial environments. The successful candidate will gain hands-on experience in laboratory settings, assist with experimental design, and contribute to data collection and analysis related to space agriculture challenges. This is an entry-level internship designed for individuals eager to learn and make a tangible impact in a rapidly evolving scientific field.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior researchers in setting up and monitoring experiments related to plant growth in simulated extraterrestrial conditions.
  • Conduct daily observations and meticulous data recording of plant health, growth rates, and environmental parameters.
  • Prepare nutrient solutions, growing media, and maintain sterile laboratory conditions.
  • Operate and maintain specialized equipment for plant cultivation, environmental control, and scientific analysis.
  • Perform basic sample collection and processing for further analysis.
  • Participate in team meetings, contribute ideas, and present findings as required.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed laboratory notebooks and digital records.
  • Support general lab maintenance and ensure compliance with safety protocols.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelor's degree program in Biology, Botany, Agriculture, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in space exploration, plant science, and sustainable agriculture.
  • Basic understanding of plant physiology and ecological principles.
  • Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite for data entry and reporting).
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous academic project or coursework experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Familiarity with hydroponics, aeroponics, or other controlled environment agriculture systems.
  • Experience with data analysis software (e.g., Excel, R, Python) is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new techniques and adapt to changing research needs.
