Job Description

The City of London is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a City Arborist Assistant / Tree Surgeon Trainee. This is an excellent entry-level opportunity for individuals with little to no prior experience in arboriculture. We offer comprehensive on-the-job training, mentorship from certified arborists, and a clear path to becoming a skilled professional in tree care and urban forestry. You will learn the fundamentals of tree health, pruning techniques, safe equipment operation, and the importance of maintaining our urban forest.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist certified arborists and tree surgeons with various tree care operations, including pruning, removal, and planting.
- Learn and practice safe work procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to industry safety standards.
- Operate and maintain a variety of tools and equipment, such as chainsaws, chippers, stump grinders, and aerial lift devices (after training).
- Help with site preparation and clean-up, ensuring safe and tidy work zones.
- Participate in emergency tree removal and storm clean-up efforts as required.
- Assist with ground support, rigging, and climbing operations under direct supervision.
- Contribute to the overall maintenance and health of London's urban tree canopy.
Required Skills
- Eagerness and willingness to learn the principles and practices of arboriculture.
- Strong work ethic and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Physical fitness and ability to perform demanding outdoor tasks in various weather conditions.
- Commitment to workplace safety and following established procedures.
- Valid G Class Driver's License with a clean driving record (or provincial equivalent).
- Ability to communicate clearly and follow instructions.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic First Aid and CPR certification (will provide training if not possessed).
- Previous experience working outdoors or in a physically demanding role is an asset, but not required.
- A genuine interest in trees, nature, and environmental stewardship.
