Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and reliable City Street Sweeper Operator to join the Paterson Department of Public Works. This crucial role involves operating specialized street sweeping equipment to maintain the cleanliness and aesthetic appeal of our city’s streets, contributing directly to the health and well-being of our community. Key Responsibilities

• Safely and efficiently operate street sweeping vehicles along designated routes.
• Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of equipment, including checking fluid levels, tire pressure, and mechanical systems.
• Report any maintenance needs, damage, or operational issues to supervisors promptly.
• Adhere to established sweeping schedules and routes, ensuring all areas are covered as required.
• Operate auxiliary equipment, such as water pumps and brushes, effectively.
• Follow all safety protocols, traffic laws, and departmental procedures to ensure the safety of yourself, co-workers, and the public.
• Maintain cleanliness of the street sweeper vehicle and associated equipment.
• Assist with other Public Works duties as needed, which may include debris removal or general maintenance tasks.

Required Skills

• Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with an air brake endorsement.
• Proven ability to operate heavy motor vehicles and equipment safely.
• Knowledge of traffic laws, safety regulations, and proper operation of municipal vehicles.
• Physical stamina and ability to work early morning hours, in various weather conditions, and perform manual tasks as required.
• Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining clean public spaces.
• Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
• Must pass a background check and drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience (1+ year) operating street sweepers or similar heavy equipment.
• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• Familiarity with the streets and neighborhoods of Paterson, NJ.
• Mechanical aptitude for minor equipment adjustments and troubleshooting.
