Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Forensic Scientist / Toxicologist to join our dynamic team in Grand Rapids, MI. This crucial role involves conducting comprehensive toxicological analyses on biological samples to detect and quantify drugs, poisons, and other chemical substances. The successful candidate will play a vital role in providing expert scientific testimony in court, maintaining meticulous documentation, and adhering to strict quality assurance protocols. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform qualitative and quantitative analysis of biological samples (e.g., blood, urine, tissue) for drugs, metabolites, alcohol, and other toxic substances using various analytical techniques.
  • Operate and maintain sophisticated laboratory instruments, including GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, immunoassay analyzers, and spectrophotometers.
  • Interpret complex analytical data, generate comprehensive reports, and formulate expert conclusions based on scientific findings.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed chain of custody records for all evidence and samples.
  • Provide expert witness testimony in court proceedings regarding analytical findings and forensic methodology.
  • Develop, validate, and implement new analytical methods and procedures in accordance with accreditation standards.
  • Participate in proficiency testing programs and internal quality control initiatives to ensure data integrity and laboratory accreditation.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement agencies, attorneys, and other stakeholders, explaining scientific results clearly and concisely.
  • Adhere strictly to all laboratory safety protocols, quality assurance standards, and ethical guidelines.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Forensic Science, Chemistry, Toxicology, or a closely related scientific field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a forensic toxicology laboratory or a similar analytical chemistry environment.
  • Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting analytical instrumentation (GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, immunoassay).
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret complex data and generate scientifically sound conclusions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for report writing and court testimony.
  • Strong understanding of quality control, quality assurance, and laboratory accreditation standards (e.g., ISO 17025, ASCLD/LAB).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and strong organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or Ph.D. degree in Forensic Toxicology, Analytical Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Board Certification by the American Board of Forensic Toxicology (ABFT) or eligibility for certification.
  • Experience with method development and validation.
  • Prior experience providing expert witness testimony.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
