Job Description

Join Norfolk Southern as a Freight Train Conductor Trainee and embark on a rewarding career in the rail industry. As a conductor, you will be an integral part of our operations, responsible for the safe and efficient movement of freight trains. This role involves significant travel across various routes, demanding adaptability and a commitment to safety and operational excellence. Upon successful completion of our rigorous training program, you will be a certified Freight Train Conductor, ready to contribute to one of the most critical transportation networks in North America.

Key Responsibilities

  • Attend and successfully complete a comprehensive, paid training academy covering all aspects of freight train operations, safety protocols, and company procedures.
  • Learn and apply rules and regulations governing train operations, including air brake tests, coupling/uncoupling cars, and proper handling of train equipment.
  • Assist in the safe movement of trains, including operating switches, inspecting equipment, and communicating with engineers and dispatchers.
  • Work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and be available for on-call assignments and extensive travel.
  • Perform physical duties such as climbing on and off equipment, walking distances, and working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Maintain clear and effective communication with team members and supervisors regarding train movements and safety concerns.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety guidelines and company policies to ensure a safe working environment for all personnel.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Ability to read, understand, and apply safety rules and regulations
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment
  • Willingness to travel extensively and work irregular hours
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Valid driver's license and ability to pass a background check and drug screening
