Job Description
EvergreenHealth is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Health Physics Specialist to join our dynamic team. This pivotal role involves ensuring the safe and compliant use of radiation sources within our healthcare facilities, encompassing everything from diagnostic imaging to therapeutic applications. The Health Physics Specialist will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining radiation safety programs, conducting radiation surveys, and providing expert guidance to medical staff. This position requires a strong understanding of radiological principles, regulatory requirements, and best practices in radiation protection. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive radiation safety programs in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., NRC, Washington State Department of Health).
- Perform radiation surveys of patient treatment areas, diagnostic imaging equipment, and radioactive material storage facilities.
- Conduct quality assurance and calibration checks on radiation detection instrumentation.
- Provide expert consultation and training to physicians, technologists, and other hospital staff on radiation safety protocols, ALARA principles, and emergency procedures.
- Investigate radiation incidents, prepare detailed reports, and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Manage the inventory, receipt, and disposal of radioactive materials.
- Participate in the planning and shielding design for new or renovated facilities involving radiation-generating equipment.
- Oversee personnel dosimetry programs and interpret exposure reports.
- Maintain thorough and accurate records of all radiation safety activities and audits.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Medical Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or a closely related scientific field.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in health physics or radiation safety, preferably in a healthcare or medical environment.
- In-depth knowledge of radiation detection instrumentation and measurement techniques.
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements pertaining to radiation safety (e.g., NRC, FDA, state health departments).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective training and collaboration.
- Ability to respond to and manage radiation emergencies effectively.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Health Physics or Medical Physics.
- Certification by the American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) or equivalent.
- Experience with radiation safety software and dose assessment tools.
- Previous experience in a hospital or clinical setting.
