Job Description
Caltrans is seeking dedicated and reliable individuals to join our team as Highway Maintenance Night Workers in San Diego. This is an incredible opportunity to contribute directly to the safety and functionality of California’s roadways during non-peak hours. As a night worker, you will be performing essential maintenance tasks, ensuring our highways are safe for travelers. This role offers high earning potential and full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is provided to ensure your safety on the job. No direct prior experience in highway maintenance is required as comprehensive training will be provided to all successful candidates. We are looking for individuals who are committed, physically capable, and ready to make a significant impact on our community’s infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs on state highways, including patching potholes, clearing debris, and repairing guardrails.
- Operate various hand and power tools safely and efficiently.
- Assist with traffic control measures, setting up cones and warning signs to ensure worker and public safety during maintenance operations.
- Conduct minor repairs on road signs and other roadside features.
- Inspect roadways for damage or hazards and report findings to supervisors.
- Participate in emergency response activities as needed, such as clearing storm debris or assisting with accident scenes.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and use provided PPE at all times.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed and materials used.
Required Skills
- Ability to work consistent night shifts, including weekends and holidays.
- Strong commitment to safety and adherence to all regulations.
- Physical stamina and ability to perform strenuous tasks in various weather conditions.
- Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs) and stand for extended periods.
- Valid California Driver's License.
- Willingness to learn and operate maintenance equipment.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in general labor, construction, landscaping, or outdoor physical work.
- Experience operating heavy equipment (e.g., forklifts, loaders, Bobcats).
- Knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B.
