Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and reliable individual to join our team as a Historic Monument Caretaker. This quiet, public sector role involves the thoughtful and careful upkeep of Coventry’s cherished historic monuments and public commemorative sites. You will be responsible for ensuring these important landmarks are clean, well-maintained, and respectfully presented. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine cleaning and light maintenance of historic monuments, statues, and memorial plaques.
  • Report any damage, vandalism, or significant wear to the relevant supervisory staff promptly.
  • Monitor the surrounding areas of monuments for cleanliness and safety, including litter removal.
  • Assist with minor gardening tasks or upkeep of immediate monument surrounds (e.g., weeding, sweeping).
  • Ensure public information notices or interpretive panels at monument sites are clean and intact.
  • Act as a visible, respectful presence, occasionally assisting the public with general inquiries about the sites.
  • Adhere to all health and safety guidelines and council policies.

Required Skills

  • A keen eye for detail and a meticulous approach to work.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently.
  • A genuine interest in local history and heritage.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills to follow instructions and complete simple reports.
  • Physical ability to perform routine cleaning and light manual tasks outdoors in various weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a caretaking, cleaning, or groundskeeping role (even voluntary).
