Job Description

Are you passionate about plants, conservation, and the great outdoors? The National Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Horticulture & Botanical Garden Intern to join our team in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland. This is an incredible opportunity for individuals with little to no prior experience to gain hands-on training and develop foundational skills in horticultural practice within a stunning botanical setting. You will work closely with experienced garden teams, contributing to the upkeep and development of our beautiful gardens and landscapes. This role involves significant outdoor work in various weather conditions, providing a truly immersive experience in garden management and conservation. Full training will be provided.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting with planting, pruning, weeding, and watering schedules across various garden areas.
  • Learning and applying various horticultural techniques under supervision, including propagation and plant care.
  • Maintaining the tidiness and aesthetic appeal of garden beds, pathways, and visitor areas.
  • Supporting pest and disease management initiatives using organic and sustainable methods.
  • Contributing to sustainable gardening practices and biodiversity projects, such as habitat creation.
  • Operating and maintaining garden tools and equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Participating in educational activities and visitor engagement as required, sharing knowledge about the gardens.
  • Reporting any issues or concerns regarding garden health or safety to senior garden staff.

Required Skills

  • A genuine passion for plants, gardening, and the natural environment.
  • Willingness to learn and take direction from experienced horticulturalists.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions, including rain and cold.
  • Reliable, punctual, and a strong team player with a proactive attitude.
  • Excellent communication skills and a positive, can-do approach.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of plant identification or fundamental garden principles.
  • Enrolment in or completion of a relevant course (e.g., horticulture, botany, environmental science) is a plus, but not required.
  • Previous volunteer experience in a garden, park, or conservation setting.
  • Full clean driving license.
