Job Description
Are you passionate about plants, eager to learn, and ready to get your hands dirty? The Untermyer Gardens Conservancy is seeking enthusiastic individuals for our Horticulture & Botanical Garden Intern program. This is an unparalleled opportunity for aspiring horticulturists, botanists, and environmental enthusiasts to gain hands-on experience in the daily operations of a world-renowned historic garden. This role is primarily outdoor-based, involving a variety of tasks essential to the beauty and health of our diverse plant collections. No prior professional experience is required; we are looking for individuals with a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn, and a genuine interest in horticulture. Full training will be provided.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist horticultural staff with daily garden maintenance tasks, including planting, weeding, watering, mulching, and pruning.
- Participate in the care of diverse plant collections, including herbaceous borders, shrubs, trees, and specialty gardens.
- Learn and apply integrated pest management (IPM) techniques under supervision.
- Support propagation efforts and nursery operations.
- Assist with garden clean-up and seasonal preparations.
- Operate basic garden tools and equipment safely and effectively.
- Maintain accurate records of plant health and garden conditions as required.
- Contribute to a positive and collaborative team environment.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and guidelines.
Required Skills
- Genuine interest in horticulture, botany, or environmental science.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Strong work ethic and a proactive attitude.

Preferred Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a program in horticulture, botany, landscape design, environmental science, or a related field.
- Previous volunteer experience in a garden, farm, or natural area.
- Familiarity with common plant identification (even basic knowledge).
- Basic understanding of sustainable gardening practices.
