Job Description
Portland State University is seeking a dedicated and compassionate International Student Advisor to join our Office of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS). This critical role involves providing expert advising and support to our diverse population of international students on immigration regulations, academic matters, personal welfare, and cultural adjustment. The advisor will be instrumental in ensuring students maintain legal status, understand university policies, and successfully navigate their academic and personal journey in the U.S. We are offering relocation assistance for this position to attract the best talent from across the nation.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide accurate and timely advice to international students regarding U.S. immigration regulations (F-1 and J-1 visas), university policies, and related procedures.
- Assist international students with applications for various immigration benefits, including Optional Practical Training (OPT), Curricular Practical Training (CPT), and STEM OPT extensions.
- Conduct orientations and workshops for new and continuing international students on topics such as immigration compliance, cultural adjustment, and academic success.
- Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and/or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), maintaining student records in SEVIS and issuing immigration documents.
- Collaborate with other university departments to ensure comprehensive support for international students.
- Develop and implement programs that promote cross-cultural understanding and integration within the campus community.
- Respond to student inquiries via email, phone, and in-person consultations.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in International Relations, Counseling, Education, or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience working with international students or scholars in a higher education setting.
- Thorough knowledge of U.S. immigration regulations pertaining to F-1 and J-1 visa holders.
- Excellent cross-cultural communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage a diverse caseload and prioritize effectively.
- Proficiency with SEVIS database and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a relevant field.
- Experience living, studying, or working abroad.
- Fluency in a second language.
- Experience with student information systems (e.g., Banner) and international student management software (e.g., Sunapsis, ISSM).
- Prior experience as a Designated School Official (DSO) or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO).
