Job Description
Are you eager to start a career in heavy machinery operation but lack experience? Biffa in Brighton is looking for a motivated and reliable individual to join our team as a Junkyard Magnet Operator (Trainee). This is an exciting entry-level opportunity to learn how to operate specialized heavy equipment safely and efficiently. We provide comprehensive, hands-on training from experienced professionals, ensuring you develop the skills and confidence needed to become a fully qualified operator. You will be an integral part of our recycling operations, helping to sort and process scrap materials, contributing directly to our environmental goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate actively in all training programs related to heavy machinery operation, particularly magnet cranes.
- Under supervision, learn to safely operate industrial magnet equipment to sort and move ferrous metals within the junkyard.
- Assist with the loading and unloading of materials, ensuring proper segregation and storage.
- Conduct daily pre-operation checks on equipment and report any maintenance issues promptly.
- Adhere strictly to all health, safety, and environmental regulations and company policies.
- Maintain a clean and organised work area, ensuring a safe operating environment.
- Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors regarding operational tasks and safety concerns.
Required Skills
- Strong willingness to learn and adapt to new tasks and machinery.
- Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work as part of a team.
- Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to safety.
- Physical fitness to perform tasks in an industrial environment, including standing, walking, and climbing.
- Basic understanding of mechanical principles (advantageous but not required).
- Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic.
Preferred Qualifications
- Valid UK driving license.
- Previous experience in a manual labor or industrial environment (e.g., construction, manufacturing) is a plus, but not essential.
- Forklift operator certificate (desirable but not mandatory, training can be provided).
