Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and community-focused Librarian Assistant to join our team at the Ipswich County Library. In this pivotal role, you will be the welcoming face of the library, assisting patrons with their inquiries, helping them access resources, and ensuring a positive and engaging experience for all visitors. Key Responsibilities

  • Welcome and assist library users with a friendly and helpful demeanor, answering inquiries both in person and over the phone.
  • Support patrons in locating books, resources, and information, including using library catalogues and digital platforms.
  • Process library materials for circulation, including checking items in and out, shelving, and ensuring accurate record-keeping.
  • Assist with the organisation and display of library collections, ensuring a tidy and inviting environment.
  • Help patrons with basic technology queries, such as computer access, printing, and Wi-Fi usage.
  • Support library programs and events, assisting with setup, registration, and participant engagement.
  • Handle cash transactions for fines or purchases, accurately recording all transactions.
  • Collaborate with other library staff to maintain a high standard of service and operational efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with library policies and procedures, including maintaining a safe and secure environment for all users.

Required Skills

  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Basic computer literacy and comfort with digital tools.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • A genuine interest in books, learning, and community engagement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a customer-facing role, ideally within a library, retail, or service environment (volunteer experience is welcome).
  • Familiarity with library management systems (training will be provided).
  • Knowledge of local community resources and events in Ipswich.
  • Ability to communicate in multiple languages is a plus.
