Job Description
Join our compassionate team as a Local Council Homeless Outreach Worker and be a vital link for individuals experiencing homelessness in Longueuil. This challenging yet incredibly rewarding role involves direct engagement with vulnerable populations on the streets, in shelters, and other community settings. You will provide immediate support, build trust, assess needs, and connect individuals to critical resources such as housing, healthcare, mental health services, and addiction support. This position requires empathy, resilience, and a proactive approach to making a tangible difference in the lives of our community’s most vulnerable members.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct regular street outreach to identify and engage individuals experiencing homelessness.
- Build rapport and trust with service users, offering non-judgmental support and understanding.
- Assess individual needs, including housing status, health, mental health, substance use, and personal safety.
- Provide immediate practical support, such as food, water, clothing, and hygiene items.
- Assist individuals in navigating and accessing local resources, including emergency shelters, medical clinics, harm reduction services, and social assistance programs.
- Advocate on behalf of service users to overcome barriers to accessing services and housing.
- Maintain accurate and confidential client records and report outreach activities.
- Collaborate effectively with internal teams, local council services, and external partner agencies.
- Respond to crisis situations with compassion and appropriate intervention strategies.
- Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and community awareness initiatives.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in social services, outreach, or a related field working with vulnerable populations.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport quickly.
- Excellent empathy, patience, and non-judgmental approach.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to navigate complex situations.
- Basic computer proficiency for record-keeping and communication.
- Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle for outreach activities.
- Bilingualism (French and English) is highly preferred, given the local context.
Preferred Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, or a related discipline.
- Knowledge of local community resources and services in Longueuil and surrounding areas.
- Experience with crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques.
- Familiarity with trauma-informed care and harm reduction principles.
