Job Description
Join the vital team at the City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works as a Refuse Collector / Bin Loader. This hands-on role involves collecting waste and recycling from residential and commercial properties, ensuring our city remains clean and healthy. Key Responsibilities
- Operate or assist in the operation of refuse collection vehicles safely and efficiently.
- Manually load refuse and recycling bins onto collection vehicles along designated routes.
- Navigate routes efficiently, adhering to scheduled collection times and ensuring all stops are covered.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment, both on the vehicle and at collection points.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections as required and report any issues.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, team members, and the public as needed.
- Adhere to all safety regulations, departmental procedures, and company policies to ensure a safe working environment.
- Assist with other public works duties as assigned.
Required Skills
- Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks, including frequent lifting (up to 50 lbs), bending, stooping, climbing, and standing for extended periods.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and punctuality are essential.
- Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Valid driver's license for commuting to work.
- Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow).
- Commitment to safety and following established protocols.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a physically demanding role or outdoor labor.
- Familiarity with Milwaukee's geography and street layout.
- A positive attitude and customer service orientation when interacting with residents.
