Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Marine Chief Engineer to lead the engineering department on board our vessels. The Chief Engineer will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of all mechanical and electrical equipment on the vessel. This critical leadership role involves managing a team of marine engineers and technicians, ensuring compliance with international regulations, and upholding the highest standards of safety and environmental protection. Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the operation, maintenance, and repair of all main and auxiliary machinery, including propulsion systems, power generation, and refrigeration plants.
- Manage and lead the engineering department crew, including performance reviews, training, and development.
- Ensure compliance with all international maritime regulations, classification society rules, and company policies.
- Implement and supervise planned maintenance systems to ensure the continuous reliability and efficiency of all equipment.
- Monitor fuel and lubricant consumption, striving for optimal energy efficiency and cost reduction.
- Manage spare parts inventory and order necessary supplies in conjunction with shore-based teams.
- Ensure the safety of personnel, vessel, and environment by adhering to strict safety protocols and environmental regulations.
- Prepare and submit detailed reports on machinery performance, maintenance activities, and incidents.
- Collaborate with the Captain and other department heads to ensure seamless vessel operations.
Required Skills
- Class 1 (Chief Engineer) Certificate of Competency (STCW A-III/2)
- Extensive seagoing experience, with significant time served as a Chief Engineer on relevant vessel types.
- Proven leadership and team management abilities in a maritime environment.
- Deep knowledge of marine engineering principles, vessel systems, and machinery.
- Proficiency in planned maintenance systems (PMS) and strong diagnostic skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a diverse, international team.
- Sound understanding of maritime safety and environmental regulations (ISM, MARPOL, SOLAS).
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering or related field.
- Experience with Wärtsilä propulsion or power generation systems.
- Additional specialized certifications (e.g., high voltage training, specific engine types).
- Familiarity with digital fleet management and performance monitoring tools.
- Project management experience for major repairs or upgrades.
