Job Description

Are you eager to kickstart a rewarding career in a skilled trade? NorthMart in Iqaluit is seeking a motivated and dedicated Meat Processing / Butcher’s Apprentice to join our team. No prior experience is required – we are looking for individuals with a strong work ethic and a desire to learn. This full-time apprenticeship will provide comprehensive, hands-on training in all aspects of meat cutting, preparation, and merchandising. You will learn valuable skills that are in high demand, setting you up for a stable and well-compensated career path in the food industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate actively in all training sessions, demonstrating a commitment to learning the trade.
  • Learn to safely and efficiently use a variety of meat processing equipment, including saws, slicers, and grinders.
  • Assist in the receiving, inspection, and storage of meat products, ensuring quality and freshness.
  • Prepare various cuts of meat according to established standards and customer requests.
  • Learn proper trimming, portioning, and packaging techniques for different meat types.
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary work environment, adhering strictly to food safety and hygiene regulations.
  • Assist with inventory management, stock rotation, and display merchandising.
  • Provide friendly and helpful service to customers, answering questions and assisting with selections.
  • Follow all company policies and safety procedures.

Required Skills

  • Eagerness and willingness to learn a skilled trade from the ground up.
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and punctuality.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Physical stamina to stand for extended periods, lift heavy items (up to 50 lbs), and perform repetitive tasks.
  • Good manual dexterity and attention to detail.
  • Basic communication skills in English.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Basic understanding of food safety principles (training will be provided).
  • Previous experience in a retail or food service environment.
  • A positive attitude and a passion for working with food.
