Job Description
Are you eager to kickstart a rewarding career in a skilled trade? NorthMart in Iqaluit is seeking a motivated and dedicated Meat Processing / Butcher’s Apprentice to join our team. No prior experience is required – we are looking for individuals with a strong work ethic and a desire to learn. This full-time apprenticeship will provide comprehensive, hands-on training in all aspects of meat cutting, preparation, and merchandising. You will learn valuable skills that are in high demand, setting you up for a stable and well-compensated career path in the food industry.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate actively in all training sessions, demonstrating a commitment to learning the trade.
- Learn to safely and efficiently use a variety of meat processing equipment, including saws, slicers, and grinders.
- Assist in the receiving, inspection, and storage of meat products, ensuring quality and freshness.
- Prepare various cuts of meat according to established standards and customer requests.
- Learn proper trimming, portioning, and packaging techniques for different meat types.
- Maintain a clean and sanitary work environment, adhering strictly to food safety and hygiene regulations.
- Assist with inventory management, stock rotation, and display merchandising.
- Provide friendly and helpful service to customers, answering questions and assisting with selections.
- Follow all company policies and safety procedures.
Required Skills
- Eagerness and willingness to learn a skilled trade from the ground up.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and punctuality.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Physical stamina to stand for extended periods, lift heavy items (up to 50 lbs), and perform repetitive tasks.
- Good manual dexterity and attention to detail.
- Basic communication skills in English.
- Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Basic understanding of food safety principles (training will be provided).
- Previous experience in a retail or food service environment.
- A positive attitude and a passion for working with food.
