Memorial Hospital Pembroke is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our orthopedic team as an Orthopedic Cast Room Technician Trainee. This is an exceptional entry-level opportunity for someone with no prior experience in casting, as comprehensive on-the-job training will be provided by our experienced specialists. You will learn the essential skills required to assist orthopedic physicians and nurses in the application, removal, and maintenance of various casts and splints, ensuring optimal patient comfort and recovery. This clinical hands-on role is crucial to our orthopedic services, requiring a commitment to learning, strong communication, and a compassionate approach to patient care.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate actively in all aspects of on-the-job training to learn proper techniques for applying and removing orthopedic casts and splints.
- Assist orthopedic surgeons and nurses during casting procedures, preparing necessary supplies and equipment.
- Provide patient education regarding cast care, mobility restrictions, and potential complications under supervision.
- Monitor patients for any signs of discomfort, skin irritation, or neurovascular compromise related to casting.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the cast room, ensuring all equipment is sterilized and ready for use.
- Document patient interactions and casting details accurately in electronic health records (EHR) as instructed.
- Order and stock cast room supplies, ensuring adequate inventory levels.
- Adhere to all hospital policies, safety protocols, and infection control standards.
Required Skills
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Exceptional willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced clinical environment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with patients and healthcare professionals.
- Demonstrated empathy and compassion for patients.
- Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work as part of a cohesive team.
- Basic computer literacy for documentation and record-keeping.
Preferred Qualifications
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (can be obtained upon hire).
- Previous volunteer or observational experience in a healthcare setting.
- Familiarity with medical terminology.
