Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Reptile / Exotic Pet Breeder Assistant to join our specialized animal care team in Exeter. This role is ideal for an individual with a passion for exotic animals and a strong desire to learn and contribute to their welfare and breeding. You will work closely with senior breeders and animal care specialists, assisting with the daily routines and specialized tasks involved in maintaining a healthy and thriving collection of exotic species.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with daily feeding and watering of a diverse range of reptiles, amphibians, and exotic pets.
- Clean and meticulously maintain enclosures, ensuring optimal hygiene, temperature, and humidity conditions for each species.
- Monitor animal health, behavior, and appetite, accurately reporting any concerns or changes to senior staff immediately.
- Support breeding programs, including careful egg collection, precise incubation procedures, and delicate hatchling/juvenile care.
- Prepare and administer appropriate, species-specific diets, ensuring proper nutrition for all animals.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of animal care, feeding schedules, health observations, and breeding activities.
- Assist with general upkeep and maintenance tasks around the facility to ensure a safe and organized environment.
- Adhere strictly to all biosecurity and safety protocols.
Required Skills
- A strong work ethic, reliability, and punctuality are essential.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and protocols precisely.
- Excellent observational skills with a keen eye for detail regarding animal well-being.
- Comfortable working with a variety of animals, including reptiles, amphibians, and feeder insects.
- Basic understanding of animal welfare principles and ethical care practices.
- Physical ability to lift moderate weights, stand for extended periods, and perform strenuous cleaning and maintenance tasks.
- Valid UK driving license is preferred for occasional supply runs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous hands-on experience in animal care, ideally with reptiles, amphibians, or exotic pets.
- A qualification in Animal Management, Zoology, Biology, or a closely related field.
- Basic knowledge of exotic animal husbandry and common ailments.
- Experience with record-keeping in an animal care setting.
