Job Description
Hilo Bay Academy is seeking a diligent and proactive School Grounds Caretaker / Handyman to maintain our beautiful campus. This role is crucial in ensuring our outdoor spaces are safe, clean, and aesthetically pleasing, and that minor repairs around the school are handled promptly. We are particularly interested in candidates who thrive in an educational setting and appreciate the unique rhythms of a school year, as term-time working options are available to align with school holidays. You will be responsible for the upkeep of our grounds, including landscaping, general maintenance, and minor repairs, contributing significantly to the positive environment for our students and staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform regular grounds maintenance, including mowing, weeding, pruning, and watering.
- Ensure pathways, playgrounds, and outdoor areas are kept clean and free from debris.
- Conduct minor repairs and maintenance tasks within school buildings and on grounds (e.g., fixing fences, repairing small leaks, painting touch-ups).
- Monitor and report any major maintenance issues or hazards to the Facilities Manager.
- Operate and maintain groundskeeping equipment safely and efficiently.
- Assist with the setup and breakdown of outdoor school events.
- Manage waste disposal and recycling across the campus.
- Adhere to all health and safety regulations.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in grounds maintenance or a handyman role.
- Ability to operate various groundskeeping tools and light machinery.
- Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and carpentry for minor repairs.
- Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Good physical stamina and ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Valid Hawaii Driver's License.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a school or similar institutional environment.
- Knowledge of tropical plant care and landscaping techniques.
- First Aid certification.
- Familiarity with local safety and environmental regulations.
