Job Description

We are excited to offer an invaluable internship opportunity for an enthusiastic and dedicated individual pursuing a career in Sign Language Interpreting (ASL/BSL). This internship is designed for those with foundational knowledge of ASL or BSL who are eager to gain practical, real-world experience under the guidance of experienced certified interpreters. You will be immersed in a dynamic environment, assisting with various communication needs and learning the nuances of professional interpreting in diverse settings. This is a hands-on learning role where your growth and development are our priority.

Key Responsibilities

  • Observe and shadow certified interpreters in various settings (e.g., educational, community events, meetings).
  • Assist with basic communication tasks and support services under direct supervision.
  • Participate in debriefing sessions and receive constructive feedback on observed interpreting techniques.
  • Support the coordination of interpreting assignments and administrative tasks as needed.
  • Engage in continuous learning and professional development activities.
  • Adhere to the interpreter's code of professional conduct and ethics.
  • Practice and refine ASL/BSL interpreting skills in a supervised environment.

Required Skills

  • Foundational knowledge and proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) or British Sign Language (BSL).
  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a recognized Sign Language Interpreting program.
  • Strong commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional conduct.
  • Enthusiastic and eager to learn from experienced professionals.
  • Basic computer literacy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with interpreting ethics and professional standards.
  • Previous volunteer experience with the Deaf community.
  • Completion of a practicum or fieldwork component within an interpreting program.
