Job Description

We are seeking a highly enthusiastic and detail-oriented Special Effects (SFX) Workshop Assistant to join our creative fabrication team. This entry-level to early-career role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the creation of props, models, set pieces, and various special effects elements for our diverse range of television productions, documentaries, and digital content. The ideal candidate will have a passion for hands-on creation, a keen eye for detail, and a willingness to learn and grow within a fast-paced workshop environment. You will work closely with experienced SFX artists and fabricators, assisting in all stages of the production process from concept to completion.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior SFX artists and fabricators in the construction and finishing of props, models, and set elements.
  • Perform basic fabrication tasks using various materials such as wood, foam, plastics, and metals.
  • Operate and maintain workshop tools and equipment safely and effectively.
  • Prepare materials, mix paints, and apply finishes under supervision.
  • Support the setup and breakdown of workshop areas and on-set locations for SFX needs.
  • Organize and maintain inventory of tools, materials, and supplies.
  • Ensure a clean, organized, and safe working environment.
  • Assist with research and development of new materials and techniques.
  • Undertake general workshop duties as required to support production schedules.

Required Skills

  • Basic proficiency with hand and power tools (e.g., drills, saws, sanders).
  • Strong manual dexterity and attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately and work as part of a team.
  • Enthusiasm for learning new fabrication techniques and materials.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to lift and move materials up to 50 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in an art, craft, fabrication, or workshop setting (personal projects count!).
  • Familiarity with various art mediums, painting, sculpting, or model-making.
  • Basic understanding of safety protocols in a workshop environment.
  • Enrollment in or completion of a technical, art, or film production program.
