Job Description
We are seeking a diligent and meticulous Surgical Instrument Sterilization Technician to join our hospital’s back-office team. In this crucial role, you will be responsible for the cleaning, sterilization, and preparation of surgical instruments and equipment, ensuring they meet the highest standards of hygiene and safety for patient care. This position is vital to preventing infection and supporting the efficient operation of our surgical departments. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional attention to detail, a strong commitment to following protocols, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Decontaminate surgical instruments and equipment using established methods and specialized machinery.
- Inspect instruments for cleanliness, functionality, and damage prior to sterilization.
- Assemble and package instrument trays according to prescribed guidelines and surgeon preferences.
- Operate and monitor sterilization equipment, including autoclaves, ensuring proper function and cycle completion.
- Maintain accurate records of all sterilization processes, including load contents, dates, and equipment parameters.
- Distribute sterilized instruments and supplies to operating rooms and other clinical areas.
- Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of sterilization equipment and work areas.
- Adhere strictly to all hospital policies, safety regulations, and infection control standards.
- Participate in inventory management of sterile supplies and instruments.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in a healthcare or related sterile environment.
- Demonstrated ability to follow precise instructions and protocols.
- Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented setting.
- Basic computer proficiency for record-keeping and inventory management.
- Physical ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 25 pounds, and perform repetitive tasks.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification as a Sterile Processing Technician (e.g., CRCST or CIS) from IAHCSMM or CBSPD.
- Previous experience specifically in surgical instrument reprocessing.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and surgical instrument identification.
