Job Description

We are seeking a highly experienced and passionate Thoroughbred Trainer / Manager to join our esteemed team at Hoosier Thoroughbred Farm. This critical role involves overseeing the daily care, training, and management of our string of Thoroughbreds, from young stock to active racehorses. You will be responsible for developing individualized training programs, managing stable staff, ensuring optimal horse health and performance, and collaborating with veterinarians and owners. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement comprehensive training programs for Thoroughbred horses of various ages and stages of development.
  • Oversee the daily care, feeding, grooming, and exercise routines of all horses under management.
  • Manage, train, and mentor a team of stable staff, including grooms, exercise riders, and assistants.
  • Monitor horse health and well-being, identifying and addressing any issues promptly in collaboration with veterinary staff.
  • Maintain meticulous records of horse performance, health, training progress, and stable operations.
  • Communicate regularly and effectively with farm management, owners, and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with all industry regulations, safety standards, and ethical treatment guidelines.
  • Coordinate horse transportation for races, sales, or other necessary movements.
  • Assist in planning and budgeting for stable operations, feed, and equipment.
  • Participate in race day activities, including saddling and pre-race preparation.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 5 years of proven experience in Thoroughbred training and stable management.
  • In-depth knowledge of Thoroughbred physiology, nutrition, and training principles.
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities.
  • Excellent observational skills for horse health and behavior.
  • Proficiency in record-keeping and basic administrative tasks.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to animal welfare and ethical equine practices.
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree or certification in Equine Science, Animal Husbandry, or a related field.
  • Experience with young Thoroughbred stock breaking and development.
  • Familiarity with racing industry regulations and processes in Indiana or similar states.
  • First Aid and CPR certification (equine specific preferred).
