Job Description
Are you passionate about protecting public health and improving environmental standards? The City of Edinburgh Council is looking for enthusiastic individuals to join our Environmental Health team as Trainee Environmental Health Officers. This is an exciting entry-level opportunity to start a rewarding career in the public sector, with full training and support provided to achieve professional qualification. You will gain hands-on experience across a broad spectrum of environmental health disciplines, working alongside experienced professionals to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of Edinburgh’s residents and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
- Shadow and assist experienced Environmental Health Officers in conducting inspections and investigations across various sectors including food safety, health and safety, housing, public health nuisances, and environmental protection.
- Learn to interpret and apply relevant legislation, codes of practice, and guidance.
- Participate in site visits to businesses, private dwellings, and public spaces.
- Assist in the preparation of reports, notices, and legal documentation.
- Engage with members of the public, businesses, and other stakeholders to provide advice and guidance.
- Undertake assigned training modules and coursework to progress towards professional qualification as an Environmental Health Officer.
- Maintain accurate records and contribute to data collection for departmental reporting.
Required Skills
- A degree in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., Environmental Health, Biology, Chemistry, Public Health) or equivalent qualification demonstrating strong analytical and scientific understanding.
- A genuine interest in environmental health, public safety, and community welfare.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently when required.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Proficiency in basic IT applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- A full UK driving licence or commitment to obtaining one (preferred, but not essential at application stage).
Preferred Qualifications
- Membership or eligibility for student membership with the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland (REHIS) or equivalent.
- Previous experience in a customer-facing role or volunteer work demonstrating a commitment to public service.
