Job Description

Are you passionate about public safety and looking for a career that makes a real difference in your community? The Cape Breton Regional Municipality is seeking a motivated individual to join our team as a Trainee Fire Inspector. This entry-level position is perfect for someone with little to no prior experience in fire safety, as comprehensive training and mentorship will be provided. You will learn the fundamentals of fire prevention, inspection techniques, and relevant codes to become a certified Fire Inspector, contributing to the safety and resilience of our region.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in a structured training program covering fire codes, inspection methodologies, and public safety protocols.
  • Assist certified Fire Inspectors in conducting routine fire safety inspections of various residential, commercial, and industrial properties.
  • Learn to identify potential fire hazards and non-compliance with fire prevention regulations.
  • Document inspection findings accurately and prepare initial reports under supervision.
  • Engage with property owners and the public to provide basic fire safety information and education.
  • Shadow experienced inspectors during investigations of fire incidents to understand cause and origin determination.
  • Attend workshops and seminars to stay updated on the latest fire safety standards and practices.

Required Skills

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong commitment to public safety and community well-being.
  • Excellent observation and attention to detail.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to learn and apply complex regulations and procedures.
  • Basic computer proficiency (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Valid Nova Scotia Class 5 Driver's License and access to reliable transportation.
  • Ability to pass a background check and physical assessment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in a related field (e.g., trades, public administration, emergency services).
  • Volunteer experience in fire services or a related public safety role.
  • Familiarity with local building codes or safety regulations.
