Job Description

Are you passionate about wildlife and the outdoors? Do you want to contribute to the protection of British Columbia’s natural heritage but lack prior experience? The British Columbia Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development is seeking a motivated and dedicated Trainee Wildlife Conservation Officer to join our team in Kelowna. This is a unique, government-funded entry-level opportunity designed to provide comprehensive training for individuals with a strong commitment to conservation and public service. You will gain hands-on experience, learn from seasoned professionals, and develop the essential skills required to become a fully qualified Conservation Officer. No prior experience is necessary; we provide all the training you need to succeed in this vital role. This position involves fieldwork, community engagement, and supporting wildlife management initiatives under close supervision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate actively in all required training programs, both theoretical and practical.
  • Assist experienced Conservation Officers with routine fieldwork, patrols, and investigations.
  • Learn and apply provincial and federal acts, regulations, and policies related to wildlife and environmental protection.
  • Help in responding to wildlife-human conflicts, injured animals, and public inquiries.
  • Conduct basic data collection and record-keeping related to wildlife observations and incidents.
  • Engage with the public to provide information on wildlife safety, conservation practices, and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain and care for equipment, vehicles, and facilities as directed.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures in the field and office.

Required Skills

  • Strong interest and passion for wildlife conservation and environmental protection.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Physical fitness and willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and challenging terrains.
  • Valid Class 5 British Columbia Driver's License or equivalent.
  • Ability to pass a comprehensive background check and medical examination.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and a calm demeanor under pressure.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of post-secondary education in environmental science, natural resource management, conservation, law enforcement, or a related field (or currently pursuing).
  • Experience with outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, or boating.
  • Basic knowledge of British Columbia's flora and fauna.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Proficiency in a second language relevant to the local community.
