Job Description
Join Astoria Greens Urban Farm as a Harvest Assistant and be an integral part of our daily operations! This is an exciting opportunity for individuals who enjoy working outdoors, are physically active, and are committed to sustainable agriculture. As a Harvest Assistant, you will primarily focus on the timely and careful harvesting of our diverse range of crops. The role involves physical work in various weather conditions, with the added benefit of early morning starts and early finishes, allowing you to enjoy your afternoons. Full training will be provided, making this an ideal role for entry-level candidates passionate about food systems and community.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform daily harvesting of a variety of vegetables, herbs, and fruits according to farm protocols and quality standards.
- Assist with post-harvest handling, including washing, sorting, and packing produce for market and distribution.
- Monitor crop health and report any pest, disease, or watering issues to the farm manager.
- Participate in general farm maintenance tasks such as weeding, trellising, mulching, and bed preparation.
- Contribute to maintaining a clean and organized work environment, including tools and harvesting equipment.
- Adhere to all food safety and organic certification guidelines.
- Work collaboratively with other farm team members to achieve daily goals.
Required Skills
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods.
- Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions (heat, cold, rain).
- Strong work ethic and attention to detail.
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Punctuality and reliability, especially for early morning shifts.
- Positive attitude and enthusiasm for sustainable agriculture.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in farming, gardening, or other outdoor labor roles is a plus, but not required.
- Knowledge of basic plant care or food safety practices.
- Familiarity with organic farming principles.
