Job Description
We are seeking enthusiastic and reliable individuals to join our team as Waste Truck Helpers for casual morning shifts. This is an entry-level opportunity within the City of Portland Bureau of Environmental Services, ideal for those looking for flexible work hours and a chance to contribute to their community. As a Waste Truck Helper, you will work alongside experienced drivers to efficiently collect waste and recycling materials from residential and commercial areas. No prior experience in waste management is required; full training will be provided to ensure your success and safety on the job. This role is physically demanding but incredibly rewarding, offering a chance to be active outdoors and play a vital part in maintaining the cleanliness and sustainability of Portland.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the waste truck driver with navigating routes and identifying collection points.
- Safely and efficiently collect various waste and recycling materials from designated bins and containers.
- Lift and load waste into the collection vehicle, ensuring proper compaction.
- Operate mechanical lifting equipment on the truck under direct supervision and after training.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations to prevent accidents and injuries.
- Communicate effectively with team members and the public.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment on and around the truck.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support waste collection operations.
Required Skills
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including frequent lifting, bending, and standing.

- Must be able to work early morning shifts, typically starting between 5:00 AM and 6:00 AM.
