Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and proactive Weed Management Officer to join our Parks and Gardens team. This vital role involves the identification, control, and eradication of various weed species across our local council parks, open spaces, and natural reserves within the Hobsons Bay area, with a particular focus on operations in Laverton. You will contribute to maintaining the aesthetic appeal, ecological balance, and safety of our public green spaces for the enjoyment of all community members. This role requires a strong understanding of horticultural practices, weed identification, and safe chemical application.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and monitor a wide range of weed species in council parks, gardens, and natural areas.
  • Implement effective weed control strategies, including manual removal, mechanical methods, and herbicide application.
  • Operate and maintain relevant equipment such as spray units, brush cutters, and small machinery.
  • Ensure all weed management activities comply with safety regulations, environmental guidelines, and Council policies.
  • Maintain accurate records of weed control activities, chemical usage, and treatment areas.
  • Provide advice and education to the community regarding responsible weed management practices.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to ongoing improvements in park maintenance.
  • Report any hazards or issues observed in public spaces to the relevant supervisor.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated experience in horticulture, land management, or a related field.
  • Proven ability to identify common weed species in urban and natural environments.
  • Knowledge of various weed control methods, including herbicide application techniques.
  • Current Australian Driver's License (manual transmission preferred).
  • Current Chemical User Permit (ACUP or equivalent).
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Physical fitness to perform manual labour in outdoor conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certificate III or IV in Horticulture, Conservation and Land Management, or a related discipline.
  • Experience operating small plant machinery (e.g., tractors, skid steers).
  • First Aid Certificate.
  • Local government experience in parks and gardens maintenance.
